HIN / Boat Codes

What's a HIN (Boatcode) ?

HIN / Boat Codes

The Hull Identification Number (HIN) – also known as Boatcode – is a series of 12 or 14 letters and numbers unique to each and every vessel.
A manufacturer’s HIN describes the hull’s country of origin, manufacturer’s identify code, a serial number, month and year of production and the model year.

Boat Code involves fixing a set of small plates (unless a manufacturer HIN has already been allocated) bearing a Hull Identification Number (HIN) to the hull of a vessel as a security measure. The HIN is similar to Vehicle Identification Numbers (VIN) on motor vehicle compliance plates.

A HIN issued by the NSW RMS will include the country of origin, a serial number, agent code and the year it is affixed.

The HIN is generally permanently attached to the vessel’s hull on the starboard aft corner (but not always) of the vessel.

HIN plates can only be issued and affixed by an authorised Boat Code Agent. If your vessel already has HIN plates, you may need to produce the HIN certificate when you re-register or transfer registration. If you are unable to produce this certificate, a Boat Code Agent must validate the existing HIN and issue a new certificate.

When do you need a HIN?

Boat Code is compulsory when:

  • Registering a boat in NSW for the first time,

  • Applying for change of ownership of a vessel that does not have a HIN, or has a HIN that is not currently recorded in NSW

  • A copy of the vessel’s registration certificate cannot be supplied

If your vessel has a Boat Code from interstate but you cannot produce the Boat Code certificate, you will need to have the HIN validated by a Boat Code agent.

What are the advantages of a HIN?

Recreational vessels are desirable targets for thieves. Boat Code is like a fingerprint for your vessel’s hull with each vessel receiving an individual HIN. Each HIN is unique and recorded on a central register that is cross-referenced with boat registrations. Anyone trying to sell or re-register a stolen vessel with Boat Code protection will be quickly caught out. Experience demonstrates that Boat Code makes tracking stolen vessels easier.
